In our urgent public debates about our broken healthcare system, we have overlooked the devastating impacts of the U.S. medical debt crisis, affecting millions of Americans.

The three authors of End Medical Debt in 2014 began RIP Medical Debt, a tax-exempt charity that locates, buys and forgives medical debt.

RIP first came to America’s attention in 2016 when HBO’s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” used the charity to abolish $15 million in medical debt. In response to public support since, by the end of 1018, RIP has abolished a half billion dollars in medical debt for 250,000 people nationwide.

From their viewpoints as debt collections and healthcare insiders, the three authors take a realistic look at our system of health care delivery and financing, telling how and why we landed in today’s crisis of skyrocketing costs, shrinking insurance coverage, rising deductibles, and mounting medical debt eating national wealth.

The authors see debt forgiveness as a necessary but interim solution until we agree on a better structure for our unhealthy healthcare system.

End Medical Debt delves into the most popular proposed solutions — repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”), insurance reform, drug price controls, adding a Medicare Option to the ACA (for those over age 50 or 55), and Medicare-for-All (single-payer universal healthcare).

The book concludes with the call to establish an American Medical Debt Commission that reports to Congress annually about the national medical debt crisis.

The book further presents a series of practical tips for those burdened by personal medical debt.

Meet the Authors

The authors are seasoned medical debt experts:

  • Jerry Ashton — 40 years in the credit and collections industry.
(Co-founder and Executive VP of Rip Medical Debt.)

  • Robert Goff — 40 years in healthcare administration management.
(Founding board member of RIP Medical debt.)

  • Craig Antico — 30 years in collections, debt buying and consulting.
(Co-founder, chair and CEO of RI Medical Debt.)

Robert Goff and Jerry Ashton are the co-authors of The Patient, The Doctor and The Bill Collector: A Medical Debt Survival Guide, published in 2016 by Hoku House. This book led to RIP gaining attention on  “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.” The rest is history, part of it told in the new book.

Hoku House pays to the authors 85 percent of all net revenues for End Medical Debt (opposite of most book deals where authors get a pittance). The authors donate ALL book royalties to medical debt forgiveness. Each book sold abolishes about $500 in medical debt.
